                this.item4_0_0 = "<span style='font-weight: bold;'>HISTORY OF THE PROTON DRIVER LINAC<br><br>Prehistory</span><br>&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp The idea of a single-stage 8 GeV injector linac to replace both the Booster and its injector linac was first brought up by Vinod Bharadwaj in a presentation to Fermilab Director John People’s Future Working Group, ca. 1994; and in an abstract submitted to EPAC'94 by Vinod and Bob Noble (then both at FNAL, now both at SLAC).<br>&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp At the time of these first proposals, the available technology was based on either the the warm-copper 'Cavity-Coupled-Linac' developed at Los Alamos and used in the 1990 Fermilab Linac Upgrade,  or else the Superconducting RF technology as it existed for the Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility (CEBAF, now Thomas Jefferson National Lab).  At the time, both the copper and the superconducting RF technology were limited to acceleration fields of about 10&nbspMillion volts per meter, which made the proposed linacs very long and expensive.  In addition, both technologies required a very large number of RF sources ('Klystrons') which greatly increased the costs of the proposals, which were not pursued.   <br><br><span style='font-weight: bold;'>THE MARCH OF SUPERCONDUCTING RF TECHNOLOGY</span><br>&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp Throughout the 1990's great strides were made in Superconducting RF Accelerator Technology.  The success of superconducting RF systems at CEBAF and LEP showed that large systems of this type could operate reliably. <br>&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp The accelerating gradients also increased dramatically.  A milestone in this was achieved in 1993 when a Cornell/Fermilab/DESY collaboration demonstrated that >20 MV/m could be obtained in a multi-cell superconducting cavity -- a result which cut the linac length by half compared to existing technology.  Progress continues today, with experimental cavities at KEK, Cornell, and DESY using electropolishing techniques to approach 45 MV/m -- very near the theoretical limit of the materials.  The Proton Driver design assumes an accelerating gradient of 25 MV/m.<br><br><span style='font-weight: bold;'>TESLA</span><br>&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp The International TESLA Collaboration under the leadership of Bjorn Wiik made crucial contributions to SCRF technology.  Compact and efficient cryomodules were developed, the RF power split and vector sum techniques were extended to drop the Klystron count by factor 36, and manufacturing of high-gradient cavities was established.  These efforts culminated in the TESLA Technical Design Report in 2001, which laid out the system design and reduced cost of a linear collider based on these techniques.  In 2004 the International Linear Collider Technology Review Panel (ITRP) selected the  TESLA Superconducting technology as the preferred path to the linear collider.<br><br><span style='font-weight: bold;'>SNS - The Spallation Neutron Source</span><br>&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp Another milestone in SCRF Technology was reached in 1999 when the Spallation Neutron Source, an approved project under construction in Oak Ridge, Tennessee by the US Department of Energy, was switched from a 1 GeV warm-copper linac to a 1.3 GeV superconducting linac.  This was an extremely bold and foresightful move by the DoE, and a clear recognition of the cost advantages of the Superconducting Linac approach.  The Main Linac of the Spallation Neutron Source was the starting point for design studies of the Proton Driver Linac.<br>&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp The SNS also began R&D on the 'fast ferrite phase shifter' technology crucial to extending the TESLA RF power split technique to proton linacs.  Although this R&D was not ultimately incorporated in the SNS design due to schedule constraints, bringing this technology to bear on the Proton Driver linac is expected to bring substantial cost benefits from a greatly reduced number of Klystrons.<br><br><span style='font-weight: bold;'>The 8 GeV Linac Proton Driver</span><br>&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp The modern concept for the 8 GeV Linac Proton Driver linac arose in discussions between Reinhard Brinkmann and G. William Foster in Snowmass of 2001.  At the time, the main consideration was exploiting the very intense proton beams available from a high-energy Linac to ensure low emittances when using the Tevatron complex as an injector to the Very Large Hadron Collider (VLHC).  The TESLA collaboration has recently documented a new cost-per-volt of Linac beam energy, and the selection of the Superconducting option for the Spallation Neutron Source provided a technical 'existence proof' for a superconducting proton linac.<br><br>FARDOG 2001 <br>PD Design Studies<br>Neutrino Oscillations<br>FLRPC;  Design study culminating in CD-0."
